Take off your uniform
Last week, our President, and commander-in-chief, George Bush told Pakistan president, and leader of the military: "You ought to have elections soon, and you need to take off your uniform. You can't be the president and the head of the military at the same time."
Of course the irony was lost on our leader, who leads our country and our military.
Musharaff, who calls himself a president, but is, in fact, a dictator, is not unlike our president, who has enlisted all the powers of a war president, in a state of emergency, so he can do what he damned well pleases. You say president, I say dictator... At least Frank Rich of the New York Times recognizes a coup, which is only subtle enough to prevent the great majority of Americans from tearing their eyes away from the latest episode of Dancing With the Stars.
If that doesn't worry you sufficiently, take some time and read about NSPD-51 (thank you SF Hansen for the bad dreams). If you don't worry that it could happen here, then it will happen here. Yeah, we're all conspiracy-theorists until it isn't a theory anymore.
Maybe you're amused by a president who laughs at the Constitution, locks up citizens without proof or cause, controls telecommunications, accuses opponents of lacking patriotism and abetting terrorists, and has a nuclear arsenal at his fingertips. I'm not amused. That would be our George W. Only a few short steps from being Pervez Musharaff. All our George needs is the right opportunity.
