Some speculate that the 19th century newspapers wars between the Hearst and Pulitzer organizations were an artificial way to increase circulation.

The Washington Post claims today that Keith Olbermann's on-air criticisms of right-wing TV host Bill O'Reilly were "instigated by Olbermann as a way of drawing attention." Those barbs directed at O'Reilly got the attention of Murdoch moguls Fox TV CEO Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch himself, who blasted NBC CEO Jeff Zucker, and parent corporation GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt. O'Reilly has taken to castigating Immelt on the air for doing business in Iran.

Needless to say, the pissing match continues as the talking heads take aim at one another and the bosses in the background provide the ammunition.

I can't imagine Keith Olbermann won't show this video of Bill O'Reilly that's been making the rounds of the blogs today, unless he's issued an injunction not to.

The video has already been pulled from Youtube, ostensibly by CBS, but one would have to think O'Reilly might have been embarassed by it.

To be fair, we've all been at that point where our temper has gotten the better of us (you can still say to some particular TV crew members "Get your own fucking grinders" and they will do a fair impression of me losing my composure). Still, one would try to avoid throwing a shit-fit while the cameras are rolling. To be fair again, this was recorded before the day of the youtubes and the internets. Still, one would have to think that blaming the floor director is something only divas do. And to be fair, this was early on his career, when doing something stupid with the cameras rolling might have been a rookie's mistake. Still, he doesn't seem to have learned, does he.

I guess once a jackass always a jackass.

A half-wit with a thesaurus

I can honestly say that I never found Dennis Miller to be funny. You have to admit that Saturday Night Live has been all downhill since the first four seasons, and Miller was responsible for his share of the downfall.

He was always more impressed with his intellect than he deserved to be. You want smart comedian, think John Stewart. You want faux-intellectual, Dennis Miller is your man. He uses big words, that he himself doesn't seem to understand, with all the subtlety of an oversized cudgel.

I haven't seen much of him lately. Mostly because if I see his face on TV, I click right on by.

I know he couldn't make it as a football commentator, following in the footsteps of that other wingnut sportsfan Russ Limbaugh. Unlike other illustrious, and even not-so-illustrious SNL alum, he never had much of a movie career (excuse me, how about "Bordello of Blood"?) And now, apparently, after a conversion to conservatism on 9/11, he's got his own syndicated methane producing right-wing talk show.

Doesn't surprise me.

So when I saw Miller criticize Chris Dodd's defense of Yearly Kos on Bill O'Reilly's political science fiction TV show, (be forewarned, I swiped the video from a conservative blogger's sight, and it's instructive to see how they viewed the encounter) I thought, "How pitiful to be so drunk on your own ego that you let it rob you of grace and common sense." Then I thought, "Dennis Miller didn't start our with much grace and common sense, so it was petty theft."

Chris Dodd should be so lucky

Blowhard conservative TV host Bill O'Reilly has been attacking the Daily Kos, and the annual Kos convention for days. In particular, he has focused on a particular doctored photo of Joe Lieberman about to get very friendly with George Bush, which has appeared on the site.

Dodd, who will be appearing at the bloggers convention, faced off with Reilly (who suggested that Joe Lieberman should never talk to Dodd again), and Dodd got the best of him. Dodd was able to throw water on this hypocrite's fire.

By the way, Bill, you might never have heard the phrase, "all publicity is good publicity," so you attempts to turn people away from Daily Kos is likely converting new surfers.
