Congressional evolution: evidence of a backbone

Perhaps the next version of the Protect America Act will not be a complete giveaway to the Bush administration.

Reports from the House of Representatives indicate that the bill will not offer telecom immunity, but will allow judges in lawsuits agains telecoms, to view classified information to decide if the lawsuits have merit.

If Congress can explain this to the government, it will be Bush who must wipe the egg from his face.

You, Yoo, you

When it comes to battling lawyers who dissemble clear laws to work in exactly the opposite way they were intended, the most useful weapon might be the law itself. I'm rooting for Jose Padilla, habeas corpus, and the Constitution on this one.

If the Senate can't recognize torture, perhaps the House can

Representatives Nadler (NY) and Delahunt (MA) have introduced a bill banning torture by any representatives of the US government or military. It should be a given, but unfortunately it isn't.

Call your representative to get them behind the bill.
